What That Claim Actually Means
It isn't that AirPods have better transducers than a set of hand-built open-back headphones. They don't, and no one who has measured both would say otherwise.
It's that the thing people are buying when they climb the headphone ladder is mostly not driver quality. Past a certain point, what separates a $300 pair from a $2,000 pair is the impression that the sound exists outside your head, in a stable space, rather than being pressed against your ears. Open-back designs, careful acoustic damping, and expensive enclosures are all ways of buying a bit more of that impression.
Apple's spatial audio produces that impression a different way, with processing. It renders sound as though it's arriving from speakers in a room, keeps that room anchored while you move your head, and can tune the whole thing to the shape of your ears. On the specific quality that most of the money on the ladder is spent chasing, it competes far above what the hardware costs.
That's the claim. Narrow, and worth checking against your own ears rather than taking on faith.
Why Placement Beats Drivers
There's a reason this is true rather than a marketing accident.
Your ability to hear where a sound is coming from is not a function of frequency response. It comes from timing and level differences between your ears, and from the way your own head and outer ears filter sound arriving from different directions. Headphones bypass all of that by construction. Two channels go straight into two ears, and none of the cues your brain evolved to use survive the trip.
Expensive headphones can improve tone, detail, and comfort. What they can't do, physically, is restore the cues. They can only imply them.
Rendering can restore them, by calculating what each ear would have received and delivering that instead. That's what HRTF processing does, and it's why a well-implemented spatial system can make a modest pair of earbuds sound more like being in a room than a very expensive pair of headphones does.
It also explains why the effect hits hardest for people who have never owned high-end headphones. It's giving them something they haven't heard before.
The Part That Makes This Frustrating
So the good news is you already own the engine. Apple built it, it ships in your Mac, and your AirPods are the other half of it.
The bad news is where it runs.
On macOS, Apple's spatial audio activates only for audio that arrives through Apple's own media frameworks. Apple Music qualifies. The TV app qualifies. Video in Safari qualifies. Spotify's desktop app doesn't. Chrome doesn't. Games don't. Most of what you play on a Mac in an ordinary day doesn't.
There's no setting to change this and no explanation offered. The toggle goes grey and that's the end of the conversation. Which means most people who own this engine experience it for a few minutes in Apple Music and then go back to flat stereo for everything else, without ever knowing what they're missing the rest of the time.
That's a strange situation. The best audio upgrade available to most people isn't for sale. It's already in the room, switched off.

Are AirPods really good enough to compete with expensive headphones?

Is this just processing, and isn't processing bad?

Why doesn't Apple just enable this everywhere?
Apple hasn't explained it. What's observable is that macOS spatializes only audio delivered through Apple's own media frameworks, so apps outside that path never qualify. Whether that's a deliberate boundary or simply an unbuilt feature is not something anyone outside Apple can answer.
Do I need to buy anything to hear the effect at its best?
