Apple's spatial audio with head tracking. Your AirPods, Apple's HRTF processing, your personalized ear profile if you've scanned one, and head tracking that keeps the sound anchored in front of you when you turn. This is the version people rave about.

Spatialize Stereo. The same Apple engine applied to ordinary two-channel audio rather than a mix authored in Atmos. It places a normal stereo track in a simulated room instead of inside your head. Lighter effect, still Apple's real processing.

Third-party "3D" and "surround" apps. A different category entirely. These use digital signal processing to fake width and surround from a stereo file. No head tracking, no Apple engine, and the processing is often audible in a way people don't like.

When someone says spatial audio ruined their music, ask which of the three they used. It's frequently the third.

Why the Skeptics Aren't Wrong

The criticism is worth taking seriously, because a lot of it is accurate.

Bad Atmos mixes exist and there are many of them. A stereo record remixed for Atmos by someone in a hurry can end up thinner and less punchy than the original. That's a mixing problem, not a rendering problem, but you still hear it.

It's genuinely a matter of taste on some material. A tight, dry drum sound placed into a simulated room isn't automatically better. Plenty of people prefer the intimacy of a straight stereo mix, and there's no argument that makes them wrong.

That's a specific claim, so here's what it does and doesn't mean. It isn't that AirPods have better drivers than a set of $2,000 headphones. They don't. It's that what you perceive as high-end headphone sound is mostly about the sound arriving as though it comes from outside your head, from a stable position, in a space, rather than being pinned to your ears. Expensive open-back headphones spend a lot of engineering money buying that impression. Apple's spatial processing produces it computationally, and it does it well.

Which is why the effect lands hardest for people who have never heard a good pair of open-back headphones in a decent room. It's giving you something you probably haven't had before.

Who It's Actually Worth It For

Based on where the effect is strongest rather than where the marketing points:

Worth it if you listen mostly on AirPods, listen to a lot of full-length albums or film and TV, get fatigued by long headphone sessions, or have never owned high-end headphones. Long listening in particular is where sound placed outside your head earns its keep.

Probably not worth it if you already listen on good open-back headphones in a quiet room, listen mainly to sparse or acoustic material you know intimately in stereo, or find any processing distracting on principle.

Test it honestly. Use Apple Music, pick an album you know well that has a real Atmos mix, and switch between Fixed spatial audio and off. Not a Spatialize Stereo version of a stereo file, and not a third-party "3D" app. Judge the good version before deciding.

The Catch on Mac

Which leads to the thing that makes this question harder on a Mac than on an iPhone.

On iPhone, spatial audio shows up in most apps you use. On macOS it only activates for audio playing through Apple's own media frameworks. Apple Music qualifies. The TV app qualifies. Video in Safari qualifies. Spotify, YouTube in Chrome, Netflix in Chrome, games, and most other players never do, so the toggle sits greyed out with no explanation.

So on Mac, plenty of people form their opinion of spatial audio from whatever they could get it working on, or from a third-party effects app they downloaded when the real one wouldn't turn on. That's a poor sample to judge from.
