Practically, that means: Spotify only, no ongoing maintenance against macOS updates, and if it breaks after an OS release, nobody is fixing it. It's also unsigned software you're granting audio permissions to, which is a judgment call each person makes for themselves.

Nothing wrong with it as a weekend project. Just know what you're relying on before you make it part of your daily listening.

Option 2: Boom 3D and eqMac

These are the apps most often recommended by troubleshooting sites, and this is the part that needs to be said clearly.

Boom 3D and eqMac do not give you Apple's spatial audio. They apply their own digital signal processing to your audio to simulate width, surround, or a "3D" effect. That's a different technology with a different result. There's no head tracking, because head tracking requires Apple's engine talking to your AirPods' motion sensors. And because the processing is applied to the signal itself, it's audible. Some people like the effect. Many find it makes music sound smeared or hollow compared to the original.

This is worth understanding for a reason beyond these two apps. A meaningful share of the "spatial audio is a gimmick" sentiment online comes from people whose only experience of it was an effects app like these. They're judging a simulation and concluding the real feature isn't worth it.

Play Spotify through open.spotify.com in Safari. Safari runs on WebKit, which is Apple's own framework, so macOS is willing to spatialize its audio. The toggle appears. It works.

The cost is what you give up in the web player. Users in the long-running Spotify Community thread on this have been specific about it: switching to the web app means losing lossless audio, local files, and audio normalization. One member in late 2025 summed up the choice as having no in-between, and called it incredibly frustrating.

You also only get Spotify, only in Safari. Everything else on your Mac stays flat.

Free, real, and narrow. If you can live in Safari and don't use local files, it's a legitimate answer.

Option 4: WaveCast

WaveCast is a macOS menu bar app that captures whatever audio is playing and hands it to Apple's spatial engine, underneath the app producing the sound.

The design choice that matters: WaveCast doesn't process your audio. Boom 3D and eqMac apply their own effects to fake a spatial or surround image, and that processing is audible.
