Play any YouTube video in Chrome on your Mac with AirPods in. Open Control Center, click your AirPods, and look at the spatial audio option. Grey. Now open the same video in Safari and look again. It's there.

What's Actually Happening

macOS has a spatial audio engine built in, and it's the same one that makes Apple Music sound the way it does on AirPods. Full HRTF processing, head tracking, your personalized profile.

It doesn't run on everything. It runs on audio that reaches the system through Apple's own media frameworks. Safari uses WebKit, which is Apple's, so video in Safari qualifies. Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc, and Opera all run on Chromium, which doesn't. Their audio arrives as plain stereo, and macOS greys out the toggle rather than explaining itself.

Apple Community threads have been circling this behavior for years without quite naming it. One user described it exactly: open Spotify and spatial audio stays unavailable, open YouTube and it suddenly becomes available. They were in Safari. They'd found the rule without knowing what it was.

The Evidence From Chromium's Own Bug Tracker

You don't have to take a blog's word for this, which is unusual for a Mac audio problem.

Chromium's public issue tracker carries an open request, issue #339678653, asking for spatial audio support on macOS with AirPods. The report states that Chromium currently lacks the support, and notes that opening the same video in Safari lets the Mac apply the spatial audio effect. That's the browser's own developers documenting the gap, in their own tracker, unresolved.

This matters for two reasons. First, it rules out every hardware explanation. If the same video spatializes in one browser and not another on the same machine, your chip, your AirPods, and your macOS version are all fine. Second, it tells you what waiting looks like. This isn't a bug queued for a patch. It's an unbuilt feature in a browser engine, and it has been sitting there for a long time.

YouTube Music Has the Same Problem

People search for YouTube Music spatial audio separately, and the answer is the same but with an extra wrinkle.

YouTube Music in a Chromium browser gets no spatialization, for the reason above. YouTube Music in Safari can pick up Apple's Spatialize Stereo treatment, because it's ordinary stereo audio playing through WebKit. What you don't get in either case is a genuine spatial mix, because YouTube Music doesn't publish one. Spatialize Stereo takes normal two-channel audio and places it in front of you in a simulated room. It's a real effect from Apple's real engine, but it isn't the same thing as a track mixed in Atmos.

Worth knowing before you go hunting for a setting that would deliver something the service doesn't offer.
