The standard answer is "both, ideally." True, and useless if you're choosing one.

Here's the more useful version. This isn't a contest between two products. It's a question about your room. In a well-treated space, monitors win comfortably. In an untreated bedroom, monitors can easily give you worse information than a decent pair of headphones, and you'll pay several hundred dollars for the privilege.

So the first question isn't which to buy. It's what your room is going to do to whatever you buy.

What Monitors Give You

A real stereo image. Sound from the left speaker reaches both ears, slightly delayed and filtered on the way to the right. That crosstalk is how your brain builds a scene. It's why a mix on speakers has depth and placement rather than a wide smear.

Physical low end. You feel bass in the room and in your body, not just at your eardrums. Kick and bass decisions are easier and more reliable.

Head movement. You can shift in your chair and hear the mix change, which is a genuine diagnostic. Sounds that only exist in one head position aren't sounds you can trust.

Less fatigue. Long sessions on speakers at a sensible level are easier on your ears than the same hours on headphones.

What Headphones Give You

No room. This is the underrated one. Headphones give you the same response wherever you are, and they don't inherit a room mode or an early reflection off a nearby wall.

Detail. Editing, noise, artifacts, small timing problems. Headphones are simply better at these, and it isn't close.

Portability and privacy. You can work at night, on a train, in a hotel. That's not a compromise if it's the difference between working and not working.

Your audience's medium. Most listeners are on headphones or earbuds. You have to check there anyway.

The Variable Everyone Skips: Your Room

Here's the part gear comparisons leave out.

A small untreated room does predictable damage. Room modes create peaks and nulls in the bass, often 10 dB or more, that shift with where you sit. Early reflections from a desk, a wall, or a screen arrive milliseconds after the direct sound and blur the stereo image. Neither problem is fixed by better speakers. A more accurate monitor reproduces the room's problems more accurately.

The practical consequence: below roughly 200 Hz, an untreated bedroom is often telling you something close to fiction. You mix bass against that fiction, and the track is wrong everywhere else.

Headphones don't have this problem. They have their own problems, which the headphone mixing guide goes through in detail, but a room mode isn't one of them.

This is why the "monitors are more accurate" claim needs an asterisk. Monitors are more accurate in a room that lets them be.

How to Actually Decide

Some honest guidance by situation.

Untreated bedroom, can't add treatment, can't play loud: headphones first. Spend the monitor money on headphones you'll actually learn, plus a reference track habit. Monitors in that room will cost more and tell you less.

A room you can treat, and freedom to make noise: monitors, plus basic treatment budgeted in from the start. Bass traps in the corners before better speakers. Treatment beats an upgrade at almost every price point.

Working late, shared space, or traveling often: headphones, and it isn't a close call.

Already have decent headphones and thinking about monitors: buy treatment and a second reference system before the monitors. Most translation failures come from having one perspective, not from having the wrong one.

Whatever you choose, the rule underneath is the same. One source of truth is never enough. Two imperfect perspectives you know well beat one perfect one you don't.

The Third Option

There's a route the comparison usually misses, because it didn't exist as a practical option until recently.

That reinstates two of the three things headphones normally remove: crosstalk and head movement.
